Tottenham news: Danny Murphy disagrees with Mauricio Pochettino’s claim regarding silverware and says winning trophies creates ‘more hunger and desire’
Danny Murphy has questioned Mauricio Pochettinos comments that winning trophies only serves to build egos, insisting it creates an appetite to go on to win more silverware.Pochettino made the comments after Tottenhamwere knocked out of the Carabao Cup byChelsea, before Crystal Palace dumped them out of the FA Cup in the same week.Mauricio Pochettino said qualifying for the Champions League is more important than winning a trophy3

“Again we’re going to have the debate whether a trophy will take the club to the next level, he said.I don’t agree with it. It only builds your ego.“The most important thing for Tottenham right now is to always be in the top four.”Murphy won the FA Cup, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two League Cups while at Liverpool and did not agree with what the Spurs manager said. The only bit he said that I dont agree with is saying that trophies are for creating egos, Murphy told talkSPORT.I dont think so, I think winning trophies creates more hunger and desire. It did when I was at Liverpool and actually it takes away pressure and stress and gives you more freedom to play.I do understand that some players can go the other way and get in a comfort zone because you are winning every season. The best players and best teams, generally, are winning consistently because they want more.I believe winning trophies creates an appetite for more.Danny Murphy won a number of trophies during his spell at Liverpool3

Part of the problem he has created himself in that the success he has had in such a short space of time, the improvement of that team and development of players under him has been phenomenal. His success has created this need and demand for silverware that maybe wouldnt have been there if he hadnt done so well.Actually there is some logic in what he is saying. Consistently being in the Champions League is going to create a bigger pot and appealing club for better players to come and then compete consistently. While Murphy understands Pochettino’s stance to a degree, he maintains Spurs can still win some silverware this season – in the form of the Champions League. He added: What he is saying is being consistently in the top four, being able to attract a better calibre of player, getting more money in the coffers whilst going to the new stadium and all that stuff is better for Spurs right now to then compete.I dont think he is saying Spurs can never compete – they are different responses for two managers at different clubs.“I think Pochettino is frustrated at the moment, you can hear that and you can feel that as he has gone out of two cups in a week.Pochettino is yet to win a trophy at Spurs3

They gave everything against Chelsea with a depleted side and the second half performance was great. He changed it tactically and they lost on penalties. They could be in the final. They have gone out against Palace because he has made a few changes, which are questionable. But they could still win the Champions League this year. The chances are they wont, everyone is saying they are not capable, but Liverpool won it that year in Istanbul.Tottenham could win the Champions League its not all doom and gloom.
