Tottenham followed all the correct protocols after Jan Vertonghen suffered a serious head injury against Ajax, Mauricio Pochettino insisted last night.A collision with team-mate Toby Alderweireld left him bleeding and briefly unable to walk during the Champions League semi-final defeat.5

Vertonghen, who briefly returned to the pitch after a lengthy assessment before being substituted, had suffered concussion but Pochettino said all the correct medical protocols had been followed and the Belgium international left the stadium at the same time as his team-mates, stating he felt fine, having briefly fainted.Spurs’ manager had to step in to stop the defender collapsing when his leg buckled as the 32-year-old was helped down the tunnel by medical staff looking ill and disorientated. I was not involved, Pochettino said. That was the doctors decision. Its so important that the rules and the protocols are there. Our medical staff followed the protocol. I was never involved. The decision was the doctors. The referee asked, and we needed to take him out he did not feel well.

However, Vertonghen lasted just a few minutes before indicating he could not carry on and play was stopped to allow him to leave the pitch.On the touchline his right leg buckled and Pochettino jumped in to steady him.5
