Liverpool’s opening goal in their defeat of Fulham was ‘illegal’, according to former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg.Mohamed Salah netted the first in a 2-0 win over the last-placed club in controversial circumstances, finishing past Sergio Rico just 14 seconds after Fulham had a goal disallowed.3

Salah fired Liverpool closer to another three points

Aleksandar Mitrovic, the forward, thought he had fired the visitors in front after heading Tom Cairney’s delivery past Alisson, but he was adjudged to have been in an offside position when the ball was played into the area.Alisson quickly restarted play with nearly the entire Fulham team out of position, and just moments later Salah had sent a neat finish into the back of their net.On review it was hard to tell if Mitrovic was offside or not, given television footage appeared to show he was, at worst, in line with Andy Robertson, the deepest of Liverpool’s defenders.3

It was the tightest of decisions against Fulham

However, former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg insists Mitrovic was in an offside position.In the Daily Mail, Clattenburg says: “A part of the body that can score a goal only needs to be in an offside position and in this case, Aleksandar Mitrovic is marginally off.“His side and shoulder are behind the last defender, so that was the right call from the assistant.”Nonetheless, Salah’s goal SHOULD have been ruled out, as Liverpool broke the rules in the build-up to his finish. “When Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson takes the free-kick,” Clattenburg continues, “the ball is moving and therefore it is illegal.“A retake should have been given by referee Paul Tierney. “In situations when a tight offside has been given and a team is celebrating, usually the referee will delay the match to make sure all players are ready for the retake.“On this occasion, Tierney didnt and Liverpool capitalised.”Xherdan Shaqiri added a second for Liverpool in the second half to secure three points that sent them to the top of the Premier League table. However, the Reds were knocked back down to second later in the day when Manchester City defeated their local rivals United in the Manchester derby.
