Paul Ince has told talkSPORT we can never stop fighting racism as he responded to the ugly scenes at Stamford Bridge where Raheem Sterling suffered alleged racial abuse from a Chelsea fan.Former England captain Ince hailed the Manchester City star for his mature reaction and also shared an incident of severe abuse he suffered during his career in Italy.3

Chelsea on Monday announced they had suspended four supporters from attending games as police investigations into the incident continue.A group of Blues fans hurled abuse at Sterling, 24, during Man Citys 2-0 defeat at the Bridge on Saturday, and one of those men joined talkSPORT on Monday to apologise for his actions.

The events have refocused the spotlight on racism in football and particularly in the English game.Former Manchester United, Liverpool and Inter Milan star Ince says racism remains not only a problem in football but also in wider society, and spoke about the abuse he endured during his stint playing in Italy.And after the incident with Sterling, he insists we can never stop working on racism.Speaking on the Hawksbee and Jacobs show, Ince said: When I look back to my career as a young kid growing up, it wasnt just on the football terraces, it was on the streets, so Ive experienced that from such a young age.3

When I went to Italy, it seems to be a cultural thing in European countries, although not in all of them.In 1996/97 when I went to play against Cremonese I experienced a whole lot of abuse.It was so bad the mayor had to write me a letter the next day to apologise for the disgraceful scenes.Since those days weve come a long, long way. Everyone; the Premier League, the Football League, the press, the fans, the players – we’ve all locked our heads together to eradicate this racist situation.But maybe weve got a little bit complacent because its always going to be there, and every now and then its going to rear its ugly head, which is what we saw on Saturday. But it wasnt just on Saturday; there have been situations in the lower leagues but we dont say anything because its the lower leagues. We only say it when its in the high-profile game.But what it says to me is that we can never stop working on racism, and its not just about black players, its about everyone of all colours, creeds, religions.You have to set a deterrent. Whatever happened at Chelsea, those people or that person needs to be banned for life from every football match and every football stadium, because if you dont set a deterrent theyll be back in two years and it wont change.3

Raheem Sterling said he ‘had to laugh’ when fans screamed at him at Chelsea

Sterling has been widely praised for his reaction to the abuse at Stamford Bridge.The City winger said he had to laugh when he heard the alleged racist remarks because he does not expect any better.Ince added: Its shameful, its disgraceful, its disgusting, its vile – but its also great in the way Raheem dealt with it.It shows to me that hes maturing, hes growing up. Maybe a couple of years ago he would have reacted and nobody would have blamed him.Weve got to keep our eyes open because its not going to go away, we need to work together.I kind of dont want to talk about these situations because it gives these people, these idiots, too much respect.We just have to keep our eyes open and stay on top of it as much as we can.
