The pick of the fixtures this week sees Manchester City lock horns with leaders Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.A huge amount is at stake with City seven points behind the Reds, and Pep Guardiola has admitted his side’s hope of retaining their Premier League crown will be in tatters if they do not win.
83 May 2003: Liverpool 1-2 Manchester City (Premier League)
This was actually the last time City won at Anfield and its a game Kopites will not look back at fondly for a number of reasons. The defeat, on the penultimate weekend of the season, meant Liverpool had to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the final day in what was a straight shootout for the final Champions League spot.Liverpool lost and to make matters worse, City’s goals were scored by Reds flop Nicolas Anelka.
85 October 2008: Manchester City 2-3 Liverpool (Premier League)
The two teams played out a belter as Liverpool came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2.Goals from Stephen Ireland and Javier Garrido appeared to have the game sewn up but a brace from Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt’s injury-time goal snatched all three points for Rafael Benitez’s Reds.
83 February 2013: Manchester City 2-2 Liverpool (Premier League)
Not a huge amount was riding on this Premier League clash, but this one will be remembered for the quality of the goals.Edin Dzeko gave City the lead after finishing off a well-worked move but Daniel Sturridge produced a bolt from the blue to get the Reds’ equaliser.Steven Gerrard then turned the game on its head with a vintage Gerrard strike – a goal that would have been fit to win any match. But Sergio Aguero had other ideas and almost instantly made it 2-2 with an excellent finish from an exceedingly acute angle after questionable goalkeeping from Pepe Reina.
813 April 2014: Liverpool 3-2 Manchester City (Premier League)
The aftermath of this game produced an iconic moment in Premier League history with Gerrard giving his team-mates a rousing team talk on the pitch after battling to victory.Raheem Sterling and Martin Skrtel gave Liverpool a dream 2-0 lead at half-time, but City fought back to make it 2-2 early in the second-half through David Silva’s finish and Glen Johnson’s own goal.Philippe Coutinho put Liverpool 3-2 up and Brendan Rodgers’ men held on for the win which seemingly put the Reds on course for a first ever Premier League title.
828 February 2016: Manchester City 1-1 (3-1 pens) Liverpool (League Cup final)
Willy Caballero was the hero in a fairly uneventful League Cup final as the former Manchester City keeper saved three penalties in a dramatic shootout at Wembley. The game went to penalties after Coutinho cancelled out Fernandinho’s opener and neither side could find a winner in extra-time.And it was Caballero who denied Lucas Leiva, Coutinho and Adam Lallana from 12 yards to give City their fourth League Cup.
89 September 2017: Manchester City 5-0 Liverpool (Premier League)
This was arguably the game which showed City would take their football up another gear.Doubles from Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane as well as Sergio Aguero’s strike earned a rampant City the win over a Reds side, who were in dire straits defensively. The game was also saw Sadio Mane sent off for kicking Citizens glovesman Ederson in the head when going for a 50/50 ball.14 January 2018: Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City (Premier League)
Liverpool did get their revenge in the return fixture at Anfield four months later by inflicting a first Premier League defeat of the 2017/18 season on City.It was an absolute thriller with two brilliant attacking sides going at each other hammer and tongs – arguably the most entertaining Premier League match of the whole season.Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave the Reds the lead but Sane equalised just before the break.Liverpool’s notorious front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah ran riot after the break, each grabbing a goal to give them an incredible 4-1 lead.
8April 2018: Liverpool 5-1 Manchester City (Champions League quarter-finals)
And the Reds had more joy over the Manchester side by ripping them to shreds in last season’s Champions League quarter-finals, winning the tie 5-1 on aggregate.Goals from Salah, Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mane gave Klopp’s men a 3-0 lead after the first leg at Anfield. And despite Jesus’ early goal in the second leg, Liverpool weathered the City storm and won 2-1 on the night thanks to second-half strikes from Salah and Firmino.
